For more than a decade, Tanya has helped families preserve their stories through portrait photography. Along the way, she noticed something she couldn't explain: the same photograph could bring joy to one person and completely different emotions to another.
Why do photographs mean such different things to different people?
That question lingered.
What began as curiosity eventually became years of interviews, research, and writing, leading to the What's the Hang-Up? book series, which explores the hidden stories behind family photographs and the relationships they shape.
Today, through portrait photography, publishing, and speaking, Tanya continues to help people preserve, understand, and share the stories behind photographs.
Tanya lives in Ontario, Canada, where she continues to photograph families, write, and speak about the stories photographs tell.
Why I Still Photograph Families
Photography is where everything began, and it continues to inspire everything I write. Every family I photograph reminds me that photographs are never just images. They become part of how we remember our lives, celebrate milestones, and tell future generations who we were.
